I woke perplexed and throbbing with pain in random parts all around my body. Alice, my friend, sat at my corner starring at me with an unfathomable expression. I moaned as I seated myself up right, examining the infirmary room. Charcoal colored curtains were drawn to block the gaze of the sun in the window at the end of the lengthy room. I fixed my eyes on Alice, and with my dry mouth I began to speak, my tone of voice out of the ordinary.
“So…,” I progressed, “What’s the verdict?”
Alice, whose new found excitement fluttered into her voice, began to stutter,
“I didn’t think you would be up and speaking so soon! I hope you are feeling all right Veronica. The doctor said you have nothing more than a couple of cuts here and there in addition to the sprained ankle on your left foot, although the rest of your body seems to be in a regular condition.”
I grunted in response.
“Do you want anything to drink, a coke or an iced tea?” Alice inaugurated; optimism in her blue eyes.
“A cup of water would be great.” A crooked smile formed into my pale face.
“Whatever you say,” She grinned, “I’ll be right back.” Alice swiftly lifted herself off of her chair and slid through the door, past the curve into the piercingly quiet hall-way. I sat inspecting the gashes in my arms, and the bruises I could feel under the emerald green polka-dot dress that the ambulance had replaced with my sweater and jeans. I weaved my long ruby-colored hair to the back of my neck; then with curiosity I examined the pressure cuff a nurse had most likely situated on my wrist earlier, while I was still unconscious. I removed the cuff unhurriedly, waiting for Alice to return with the water I had asked her for moments before. I unwrapped myself from the blankets that were fastened firmly around my body and sighed painfully. I felt obligated to stand-up, and in regard to the ever-present instinct that had instructed me to, I followed. I swung my feet to the side, and bit-by-bit I pushed my self down to touch the floor that had a sub-zero, glacial feel; which had sent shivers down my spine. I looked below to see my bandaged foot, pastel colored bruises, barely visible, made a barrier around the end of the receding swath of bandages. My feet finally gathered up the strength to hold my body up, but for
extra support I held on to the bed in order to keep my balance. I rejoiced and began to stretch my arms and legs. As my poor yoga continued, Alice walked in, a cup of ice water in her hand and a broad smile spread out across her face.
“Sorry,” she began, “I couldn’t find the…”“I don’t mind,” I interrupted, taking the cup from her hand. The plastic cup was filled to the brim with water and the refreshing ice, whose coolness bled through the cup, and inflicted frost-bite into my hands.
